College scholarships can save your education

Getting the right kind of education today takes a lot of financial backing which most of us do not have. Going to college is the dream of every one but some times it just remains a dream which is why college scholarships have come to the rescue. College scholarships have been introduced by private and governmental agencies to assist needy by intelligent students further their education to the highest levels. There are college scholarships from degree to the highest certificate depending how you search.

Mostly, high schools receive a number of scholarships for students who get a particular score in their examinations or students who are actively involved in some form of sports and are excelling in that field very well. Also, there are special college scholarships for single moms and students who want to study specific courses like law, forensic science, accounting, nursing and other courses that help to make the world a better place; there are also special college scholarships for intelligent but handicapped students in various courses. College scholarships have saved the lives of many intelligent but needy students and have given them the opportunity to also smile and have an education like every one else.

If you are one of the many people out there searching for college scholarships, i advise you start by checking the websites of the colleges you have shortlisted you would love to attend and check whether they have some scholarships available. If they do, read the requirements and if you fit apply but if you do not for all the schools then i believe it is time to start your search for private college scholarships that are offered by individuals and mostly needs the applicant to either write a story of their life, their dreams, research on some topics, a documentary, and other areas in order to get the scholarship.

Apart from college loans, college grants are available for students who are financially constrained. The beauty of college grants is that it is free money that can make the attainment of college education a stress free undertaking. College grants are available in all levels of government; federal or state as well as non profit organizations.

Government college grants are the best because of reliability and less stringent terms and condition. Federal college grants are easy to get and are available for low income families. Federal college grants are available for those pursuing high school diplomas as well as freshmen and sophomores. For instance Academic Competitive Grants seek to assist freshmen and sophomores who have a good academic record and have exhibited good leadership traits at the community level. Science and Mathematics Access to Retain Talent Grant (SMART) targets students in junior and senior college levels who wish to study engineering, computer science or mathematics.

The award of college grants does not discriminate on the basis of race or ethnicity provided the students meet all the requirements. However some states may request for services from a potential beneficiary in exchange for funds. For example a nurse willing to further his or her education may be required to offer free services to a local health facility and in return obtain a full college grant.

To obtain government college grants, student must prove that they genuinely need assistance. Documents such as parents’/guardians’ financial and tax returns may be required to ascertain the level of financial assistance to be given.

Remember the government receives thousands of application and the staffs need time to go through each one of them. For this reason applying well ahead of time is recommended rather than last minute dash that may cost the applicant a learning opportunity. The success or failure of college grants application is solely dependent on the applicant. Therefore it is important the do research on specific requirements and necessary documents. Finally it is important to write an essay explaining what goals one aims to achieve by attending college.

Rights and Responsibilities on College Loans Liability

* When parents cosign for their child’s college loans and the student does not pay them, parents are liable for the payments. When the child makes intermittent payments, the parents’ credit score is adversely affected.
* Lenders in the past were generous in giving out money for college loans. Individuals have been known to use college loans to make car payments, mortgage payments or to finance outings such as Spring Break trips. College loans are still owed regardless of how the money was used, even if the property or assets purchased with that money are no longer in your possession.
* College loans are still owed regardless of whether or not you completed your degree or were able to get a job in your field.

Rights and Responsibilities on College Loan Forgiveness

* When the borrower dies and there was no cosigner, the college loans they took out as a single person are extinguished. If you live in a community property state, college loans taken out by one spouse while married may remain the responsibility of the surviving spouse.
* Federally insured student loans cannot be discharged in bankruptcy. Only near or total disability can result in forgiveness of federally backed student loans. Private college loans are rarely discharged in bankruptcy but can be negotiated into longer payment terms.
* There are programs such as Public Service Loan Forgiveness that allow those working in qualifying jobs to have their debt forgiven after 120 months of payments. All local, state and federal government jobs are part of the Public Service Loan Forgiveness. Policemen, firemen and military service members also qualify for the Public Service Loan Forgiveness. However, it is the responsibility of the debtor to enroll in the program. You do not get public service loan forgiveness unless you enroll. Then you must make all payments on time and in full. Skipping payments can result in discharge from the debt forgiveness program.
Public librarians and social workers in the public sector are eligible for this program. Teachers in federally designated high-need areas are also allowed to participate in the Public Service Loan Forgiveness program. However, if you change jobs to an employer not covered by the Public Service Loan Forgiveness program or the private sector, you’re left paying the college loans at their original terms. What if you work 10 years in the program? Once you reach the 120th payment, it is your obligation to file for debt forgiveness.
